I. What is Checked Baggage?

Checked baggage is baggage that passengers hand over to the airline for transport in the aircraft's cargo hold. Unlike carry-on baggage, checked baggage does not need to be carried into the cabin, but is sent from the check-in counter and returned after the flight ends. Checked baggage usually has specific weight and size restrictions, and sometimes additional fees may be required if the limits are exceeded.

II. What can I carry in my checked baggage?

Each airline has its own regulations on checked baggage, so it is difficult to determine exactly what items are allowed. However, there are some types of baggage that are not accepted, such as:

• Dangerous goods such as acids, radioactive substances, poisons, guns and flammable substances.
• Other dangerous items, unless packaged and transported according to regulations.
• Fragile baggage such as glass and alcohol will not be transported if regulations are not followed.
• Fresh, perishable foods such as fruits, meat, bread.
• Toys or items that resemble weapons.
• Corrosive, toxic and radioactive gases.
• Foods with strong odors such as durian, shrimp paste.
• Money, precious metals, and jewelry are not allowed in checked baggage.

III. Checked Baggage Weight

1. Vietnam Airlines checked baggage weight regulations

The checked baggage price is 450,000 VND for 23 kg for domestic flights and from 50 - 180 USD for international flights.

2. Vietjet Air checked baggage weight regulations

Vietjet offers 4 different ticket classes: Eco, Delux, Skyboss and Skyboss Business. Each ticket class has its own separate checked baggage benefits:

• With Eco class you get 7kg of free carry-on baggage, however if you have checked baggage you have to pay extra. 
• For Deluxe class tickets, you will get 20kg of free checked baggage for flights under 7 hours and 40kg of checked baggage for international flights over 7 hours.
• Skyboss fare class includes free 30kg checked baggage and 1 golf set not exceeding 15kg (if any) for flights under 7 hours and 50kg checked baggage for international flights over 7 hours.
• Especially with Skyboss Business, you will get free 40kg checked baggage and 1 golf set not exceeding 15kg (if any) for flights under 7 hours and 60kg checked baggage for international flights over 7 hours.

The checked baggage price of Vietjet Air will range from 155,000 VND - 435,000 VND/domestic flight. From 264,000 VND - 1,400,000 VND/international flight.

3. Bamboo Airways' checked baggage weight regulations

Bamboo Airways' free checked baggage regulations are:

• Quantity: No more than 03 pieces/passenger (Business Class) and 02 pieces/passenger (Economy Class).
• Maximum weight/package: 32kg. 
• Total three-dimensional dimensions (length + width + height)/package: Not exceeding 203cm.

Domestic flights:

Bamboo Airways' baggage prices range from 60,000 VND - 320,000 VND/ leg.

IV. Checked Baggage Size

1. Vietnam Airlines checked baggage size regulations

Vietnam Airlines' checked baggage size has been officially adjusted since August 1, 2019, the total maximum dimensions allowed are length x width x height must not exceed 158cm for domestic flights and 203cm for international flights.

2. Vietjet Air's checked baggage size regulations

Vietjet Air's checked baggage size is maximum 119cm x 119cm x 81cm. For large carry-on baggage, the maximum size is 56cm x 36cm x 23cm and small carry-on baggage must not be larger than 40cm x 30cm x 10cm.

3. Bamboo Airways' checked baggage size regulations

Each piece of carry-on baggage has a maximum size of 203cm in all 3 dimensions: length x height x width.

V. Some notes for checked baggage on the plane

• Do not keep or transport luggage for strangers at the airport.
• If you buy additional checked baggage, you should do it right away when booking your ticket to avoid price increases.
• Checking in goods cannot be done online but must go to the airport counter to complete the procedures.
• When checking in your suitcase, pack and lock it tightly to ensure the safety of your belongings.
• Prohibited items in checked baggage include: drinks with alcohol concentration > 70%, sharp objects > 10cm, tools to cause injury, weapons, explosives, and other dangerous substances.
• For goods that easily emit odors such as fish sauce or seafood, wrap them tightly and tape them firmly to avoid causing damage.
• To avoid losing your luggage, attach a personal information tag to the suitcase strap and notify security staff if you need help.
